West Bengal Foundation Day: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party TMC and Governor CV Anand Bose are at loggerheads over clashes during nominations before the Panchayat elections in West Bengal. The Governor has established a ‘Peace Room’ in the Raj Bhavan. He said that the purpose of Peace Room has been done for peace of the common man in Bengal and to be able to use his franchise without fear.

Meanwhile, there has been a controversy regarding the celebration of the foundation day of the state. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to Governor CV Anand Bose expressing surprise over his ‘unilateral’ decision to celebrate the state’s foundation day on Tuesday (June 20).

‘The pain and shock of partition was such that…’

CM Mamata Banerjee said that the pain and shock of partition was such that the people of the state never celebrated any day as foundation day since India’s independence. The Chief Minister in his letter to the Governor said, "I am shocked and surprised to learn that you have decided to organize an event at Raj Bhavan, Kolkata on 20th June, which you have specifically chosen to describe as ‘West Bengal State Foundation Day’."

Incidents of violence are reality- Governor

Governor CV Anand Bose said incidents of violence in rural areas ahead of panchayat elections are ‘reality, not fiction’ and he is focusing on stopping them. Bose said, "Many incidents have happened, which we are trying to stop. By us we mean the working together of all the stakeholders, including the State Government, the State Election Commission (SEC), all political parties, the media and the silent majority."
