Kumarghat Jul 03: Expressing deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the tragic ‘Ulto Rath Yatra’ incident in Kumarghat on June 28, last, the minister for social welfare and social education, Tinku Roy, on Monday handed over a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the victim families.

It was on June 28 this year when seven people died and at least 16 others sustained severe injuries after being electrocuted during the ‘Ulto Rath Yatra’ in Kumarghat under Unakoti district.

Chief minister Dr Manik Saha promptly visited the spot and announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased as he expressed his heartfelt condolences over the tragic incident.

Having handed over the amount to the families of the deceased as he personally visited each residence on Monday in Kumarghat, minister Tinku Roy said, “What happened cannot be altered but the state government promises to stand by the family of the victims”.

“This assistance has been given as per the promise announced by the state government so that the families do not have to face any other problems in the education of the children.  Besides, the financial assistance announced from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund will also be provided within few days”, he said.

Roy further said, “Today, Rs 3 lakh 90 thousand have been paid to the family members of the 7 people who died due to electrocution in the ‘Ulto Rath Yatra’ at Kumarghat through their bank accounts as earlier a sum of Rs 10,000 was already given to them through the SDM”.

Apart from this, the state government is bearing all the expenses for the treatment of the injured, while victims with burn injuries exceeding 60 percent will be provided Rs 2.50 lakh and those with burn injuries between 40-60 percent will be given a compensation of Rs 74,000.

Kumarghat Municipal Council Chairperson Biswajit Das, Unakoti District Magistrate TK Chakma, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Subrata Kumar Das and others accompanied the minister as he handed over the compensation amount to the victim families.
