Agartala June 09: Pressing for four-point charter of demands related to students;’ welfare, Tribal Students’ Union (TSU), central committee on Friday placed a deputation to the Director of Tribal Welfare Department, Govt of Tripura.
Talking to the reporters about the demands, one of the leaders said, “The tribal students who belong from extreme remote villages of the state and are staying in different hostels for study purposes are facing difficulties in getting the financial assistance for their hostel mess. This is because of the new system where the parents of the students receive an OTP (One Time Password) in their mobile phones and later the money is provided after only sharing the OTP”.
Earlier, the same assistance was directly provided by the hostel warden. Many of the parents do not possess any mobile phones, many are extremely poor or are living in remote villages. Following which the students are finding it hard to collect the mess amount as they cannot share the OTP.
The TSU, student body members demanded the Director of Tribal Welfare Department to find an alternative way that would be feasible for all the students.
Apart from that the delegation also inquired about the Dasharath Deb Memorial Award that used to be provided to students who secured 80% or letter marks in the examination by the state government which is allegedly stopped after the BJP-IPFT government came to power.
The leaders demanded the state government to re-start awarding the meritorious students in a bid to encourage them for further studies.
The student body further alleged, “A continuous delay is noticed in providing the stipend to the students and this is hampering their studies”.
They demanded the Director to look into the matter and ensure that the ST students receive the stipend within a specific time.
