DERC Chairman Appointment: The controversy over the appointment of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) chairman continues in the capital. Meanwhile, a hearing on this matter was held in the Supreme Court, after which the swearing-in of the DERC chairman in Delhi will remain suspended for the time being. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Central Government and the LG of Delhi in this matter, after which the next hearing of the matter will be held on July 11. Till then the ban on swearing will continue. Delhi government’s counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi sought a stay on the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for July 7.

‘Preparing to shut down 200 units of free electricity’
A petition was filed in the Supreme Court by the Delhi government against the appointment of former Justice Umesh Kumar as DERC chairman, which But the hearing took place. Advocate Singhvi, appearing on behalf of the Delhi government, said that by making himself the chairman of the DERC, the LG wants to stop 200 units of free electricity to the people of Delhi. That’s why this appointment should be banned. After this, the counsel appearing for the LG office replied.

LG office gave this argument
At the same time, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for LG office, protested calling it a baseless statement. Mehta said that the Delhi government was fully aware of the appointment of Justice Umesh Kumar. He said that the Delhi government wants to challenge the Centre’s ordinance, before that it wants to prepare by getting a stay on the implementation of the order issued on the basis of a part of it (appointment has been done on the basis of section  45-D). After this debate from both sides, the Supreme Court has currently issued notices to the LG and the Center seeking their answers. A decision on the appointment of the DERC chairman can be taken only after the next hearing of the matter.
