Belonia Jul 4: The office building of Belonia Power Department is in deplorable condition as the walls and ceilings are peeling. The toilets have already become unusable while pillars of the buildings are standing like skeletons with plasters falling off. A portion of the ceiling was broken and hanging precariously.
“The building remains in dilapidated condition for many years as repair works were not conducted. Neither the Left Front government nor the BJP-led government took any initiative to renovate the office, so far”, alleged staffs of the Office. They also alleged owing to lack of the toilets, they have to use neighbour’s toilet.
Local people also vented anger at the negligence of the concerned authority in repairing the Office and demanded immediate renovation works.
The Power department’s lethargic approach is not limited to repairing its own office. A high tension 3300 KV wire is dangerously hanging overhead as one of the electric poles tilted at the SankarMath area under Sukantanagar Panchayat in Belonia for the last six months. People are feeling insecure to walk along the road and use tractors in their crop fields. The fear multiplied many more times after the Kumarghat Rath tragedy.
According to the villagers, several pleas were made but no steps were initiated to rectify the faulty wire.
“We called up Bankar-based call centre which suggested we contact Power Department at Belonia. Accordingly, we informed them, but they told us to contact Rajnagar Power Department. We are running from pillar to pillar in vain”, alleged one of the residents of Sankar Math.
It is obvious that the Power department has learnt no lesson from the Kumarghat tragedy. The apathetic attitude of the Power department has put the life of people at stake, villagers alleged.
