Ram Vilas Paswan Birth Anniversary Special: July 5 is the birth anniversary of Lok Janshakti Party founder and late former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan. His name was included among the prominent Dalit leaders of the country. He was such a leader who left the government job and decided to become a ‘government’. Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav once sarcastically called Ram Vilas Paswan the ‘meteorologist of politics’, after which this tag remained with him.
How did Paswan become the meteorologist of politics?
About three months before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the then Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had suggested RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav to give some more seats to the Congress in Bihar. He feared that if this did not happen, there would be a risk of being thrown out of the UPA.
During that time Lalu Prasad Yadav was the Railway Minister in the UPA-1 government. Lalu Yadav did not heed the suggestion of his cabinet colleague Ram Vilas Paswan. When the results of the 2009 Lok Sabha elections came, Lalu Yadav’s RJD suffered a huge loss. Ram Vilas Paswan also lost from Hajipur.
According to Paswan’s prediction, the Congress had come to power for the second time in a row. Since then Lalu Yadav started calling Ram Vilas Paswan a meteorologist, which meant that Paswan used to sense which way the wind was blowing in politics.
Lalu Yadav had also privately admitted that not heeding Paswan’s suggestion was one of his biggest political blunders as the RJD was thrown out of the UPA and the RJD chief had to go to jail in 2013.
2014 Lok Sabha elections, Ram Vilas Paswan, his son Chirag Paswan were among the six LJP MPs who won in the Modi wave. Ram Vilas Paswan was the only Union Minister who worked with six Prime Ministers. Before joining the Modi government in 2014, Paswan had served in the governments of VP Singh, HD Deve Gowda, Inder Kumar Gujral, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh. He became the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in the first and second Modi governments.

The government itself has become
Ram Vilas Paswan once made an interesting mention about the beginning of his political career. He had told, “In 1969, I was selected in both the police and the assembly together. Then one of my friends asked, tell me, do you want to become a government or a servant? Then I chose politics.” He died on 8 October 2020 at the age of 74 after prolonged illness.
