Quran Burning in Sweden: The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Wednesday adopted a resolution calling on countries to do more to stop religious hatred in the wake of incidents of Quran burning in Europe. (July 12) approved. It was supported by India.
Western countries were objecting to this and they were apprehensive that the strict measures of the governments could block the freedom of expression. The 47-member United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Wednesday approved a resolution brought by Pakistan and Palestine by 28 votes against 12. Seven members abstained from voting.
What did India say?
India voted in favor of a resolution that ‘condemns recent public and premeditated acts of desecration of the Holy Quran. Also underlines the need to hold perpetrators of these acts of religious hatred accountable in line with the obligations of states arising from international human rights law.
As soon as the proposal was passed, applause started ringing in the House of the Human Rights Council. Along with many developing countries in Africa, China and West Asian countries have also supported the proposal. These include Bangladesh, Cuba, Malaysia, Maldives, Qatar, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates.
What’s in the proposal?
Countries that voted against the proposal are Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. This proposal has come in the backdrop of recent incidents of Quran burning in some parts of Europe. The resolution calls on countries to take steps to prevent and prosecute acts of religious hatred and their advocacy that incite discrimination, enmity or violence.
What did Pakistan say?
Pakistan’s Ambassador Khalil Hashmi stressed after the vote that there is nothing in this resolution to block the right to freedom of speech, but it is an expression of Strives for a judicious balance between freedom of action and special responsibilities.
