When was the Citizenship Amendment Act enacted?

Let us tell you that for the first time the Citizenship Amendment Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016. It was also passed in the Lok Sabha but could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha. After which it went to the parliamentary committee. When the Modi government came to power again in 2019, it was passed in the Lok Sabha on 10 December and in the Rajya Sabha on 11 December the same year. The President of India also gave his assent to it on December 12, after which the Bill became an Act. This law was made effective from 10 January 2020.

Generally after the formation of any law, its rules have to be made in 6 months. If this does not happen, time has to be sought from the Parliament. The Ministry of Home Affairs has several times demanded time to frame the rules of law. Citizenship can be applied for only after the rules are made.

Who will get citizenship through this law?

Through CAA, refugees belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Christian and Zoroastrian religions from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are to be given Indian citizenship. Under this law, citizenship has to be given only to those people who came to India before 31 December 2014 and took refuge. In May 2022, Home Minister Amit Shah had said that CAA will be implemented as soon as Kovid is over.
