54 countries to have internet shutdowns from 2019 to 2023 

  • 81 internet shutdowns in 14 countries in 2023 cost $1.72 billion to date. 
  • In 2023, 17,901 hours  Internet was banned worldwide.
  • Ethiopia was the most affected country so far this year due to internet ban, which had to suffer a total loss of $ 526 million. It is followed by Myanmar and India.
  • 114 internet shutdowns in 23 countries to cost $24.67 billion in 2022.
  • Globally internet was banned for 50,065 hours in 2022. 
  • Russia was the most affected country in 2022, which suffered a total loss of $ 21.59 billion. It is followed by Myanmar and Kazakhstan.

  • The total duration of internet ban in 2021 was 30,179 hours, which was 11 percent more than in 2020.

  • A total of 134 internet shutdowns in 22 countries cost $8.07 billion in 2019.
  • Internet banned for 19,207 hours. Iraq was the most affected country in 2019, with losses of $2.3 billion. 

India will lose Rs 4300 crore in 2021

According to a World Bank report, the cost due to internet shutdowns in Myanmar alone was around US$ 2.8 billion from February-December 2021. At the same time, in the year 2021, the Internet in India was closed for about 1,157 hours, in which there was a total loss of Rs 4300 crore. Actually, when the net remains closed, all financial transactions etc. stop, due to which there is a loss of crores on a large scale.

During the year 2016 to 2021, there are 12 countries from where internet services were canceled more than 10 times. But most reports have come from Asia and Africa.
