Agartala Jul 12: As a part of nationwide protest program, Tripura Pradesh Congress on Wednesday held ‘maun-satyagraha’ (silent protest) in capital city’s Gandhighat area against the disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi from Parliament following his conviction in the Modi surname defamation case.

Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, former chief minister Samir Ranjan Barman, Szarita Laitphlang along with several other leaders of the party took part in the protest demonstration.

The leaders and activists wore black bands on their moths to symbolically convey that freedom of speech has been jeopardized under the BJP-led central government.

Besides, a photograph of Rahul Gandhi with a message “Daro Mat, The Fight for Truth Shall Continue” was displayed via placards at the satyagraha.

Speaking to the reporters, Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha slammed the BJP led central government for snatching away the rights of common people given by the Constitution.

He said, “The Modi led central government has been attacking the democracy since its establishment. People have lost their rights to speak. Anyone who raises voice against the Modi government’s wrongdoings are subjected to harassment or several kinds or are called as terrorists”.

“Expelling Rahul Gandhi from the Parliament is nothing but a conspiracy of the BJP-led government”, he added.

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman said, “Democracy is in danger. The questions raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Parliament was in interest of the common people. Opposition always has the right to raise its voice”.

“Rahul Gandhi sought answers over Bank frauds of Rs 98,952 Cr in past 5 years alone. Why have loans worth Rs 10,00,000 lakh crore been waived off by the Modi government in 5 years? The House could not answer the questions and instead disqualified Rahul Gandhi to cover their own faults”, he added.

Congress workers are holding ‘silent satyagraha’ against this opposive attitude of the government. Said Roy Barman.

Talking to the reporters, former chief minister Samir Ranjan Barman said, “People are prevented from joining the protest program of the Congress”.

“Many people have called me and have expressed solidarity with the protest and its cause but they are afraid to join from the front as they were warned of dire consequences by the ruling party not to join Congress’ protests”, he added.

The Congress leaders also criticized Gujarat High Court’s decision in Rahul Gandhi’s case that was appealed against suspension of Gandhi from the Parliament for 6 years.
