Agartala June 17: The BJP, which leads the coalition government with IPFT in Tripura, has received a major boost on Saturday ahead of the forthcoming 2023 Lok Sabha elections.

A huge chunk of at least 13 senior leaders from different wings of TIPRA Motha, the ruling party in the state’s lone tribal council joined under the banner of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The defectors were welcomed by BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee by handing over the party flag in presence of East Tripura MP Rebati Mohan Tripura, Minister for Tribal Welfare Bikash Debbarma among others.

Addressing the press at state BJP headquarters in Krishnanagar, Agartala, Rajib Bhattacharjee said, “All the new senior TIPRA Motha leaders who have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today are seen is a key component to the party with the Lok Sabha elections knocking at the door”.

“With the double engine government, overall development of the janajati people is on the priority list. By working together, the dream of ‘Ak Tripura Srestha Tripura’ can be achieved”, he added.

Bhattacharjee further urged the new joinees to reach out to the people in their respective areas in a bid to apprise the indigenous people about the developmental and people-oriented works done by the BJP government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On being asked about the reason behind leaving Tripura Royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman’s TIPRA Motha, the new joinees said, “The reason behind leaving TIPRA Motha and joining BJP is to work for the people that has become impossible by holding allegiance to the other party”.

Answering the question of the reporters of having participated in the movement for greater Tipraland, one of the senior tribal leaders said, “We agree that the demand of greater Tipraland is constitutional but we are not clear about the meaning of it and also its aftermaths”.

MP Rebati Mohan Tripura claimed that the BJP is working for the welfare of the common man and political leaders can serve the people only by being associated with it.
