Summons issued against BBC and others for documentary on Gujarat riots -aabtak24

BBC Documentry Case: Delhi’s Rohini Court on Friday (July 7) issued summons to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Wikimedia Foundation and Internet Archives over the documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ . The BJP leader had filed a petition in the court regarding this. It was said in the petition that there should be a ban on the publication of the documentary, which is related to PM Modi, RSS. 

Rohini Court’s Additional District Judge Ruchika Singla said in the lawsuit filed on behalf of BJP leader Binay Kumar Singh that BBC, Wikimedia Foundation and Internet Archives are foreign organizations. He said that the summons should be as per the guidelines issued by the Delhi High Court. It is directed that fresh summons be issued to all the three companies on filing of PF within seven days.

The Court further observed that under the Hague Convention and the rules framed by the Government of India, summons abroad can be effected only through the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law, which in the present case is determined to be not done formally. 

What is the whole matter

Actually, a defamation case was filed on behalf of BJP functionary Binay Kumar Singh, in which three organizations, BBC, Wikimedia Foundation and Internet Archives were demanded to be stopped from publishing the banned BBC documentary on 2002 Gujarat riots. On May 26, the court had reserved its order regarding the BBC and others, as per the Hague Convention. Issuing a fresh summons, Additional District Judge Ruchika Singla listed the matter for further hearing on November 18.
