State Govt. to free 5 convicted prisoners on I-Day – aabtak24

Agartala Jun 27: Considering the completion of 66 percent of their sentence and in view of good conduct, the Home Department of Tripura government has decided to release five prisoners on the eve of Independence Day, 2023.

This was announced by Secretary of the prisons under Home (Jail) Department, Tapash Roy as he addressed the press from the Civil Secretariat here on Tuesday.

Briefing the report on the initiatives taken up by the department after March 8, 2023, Roy said, “Under the revision of recruitment rules of Warder (Female), amendment of Recruitment Rules of Female Warder by way of enhancement of considerable age from 24 to 27 years, in case of general candidates, has been done in order to facilitate greater participation of un- employed youth. Besides, ST/SC candidates will get additional 5 years relaxation over 27 years of age”.

The secretary also informed that in compliance with the order of the state government in a bid to achieve a paperless working environment, Home (Jail) Department has already initiated an e-office system and file movement through electronic mode.

Speaking about the special Remission under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on 15th August 2023, Roy said, “Preparations have already been started in view of this”.

Apart from that, initiatives have been taken for adoption of draft Model Prisons and Correctional Service Act, 2023 in the state of Tripura.

“At present the Prisons Act, 1894 is still in force. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India has prepared a draft Model Prisons and Correctional services Act, 2023. Home (Jail) Department has already taken initiative for adoption of the same through state legislature”, he said.

Also, on March 27, 2023, the Home (Jail) Department laid down the Tripura Sanshodhanagar Rule, 2021 in the state legislature.

The secretary, State Home (Jail) Department further said, “Initiative taken up for redressal of poor indigent prisoners who are unable to pay fine money through District Legal Service Authority”.

“From April 24, 2023 all victim compensation amount is to be provided through electronic mode, DBT system to the concerned victims. Already 03(three) nos. victims’ cases have been uploaded in Beneficiary Management System (BMS) Portal for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and very soon the inauguration of payment through electronic mode will be made by the Minister, Home (Jail) Department”, he added.

The secretary further said that under the directions of Minister for Home (Jail) Department, Industries and Commerce and OBC Welfare, Shantana Chakma initiatives have been taken to conduct STI, HIV, TB and Hepatitis tests for all the prisoners in all the districts of the state.
