West Bengal Panchayat Election: The results of the panchayat elections held in West Bengal have come out, in which the ruling party TMC has registered a resounding victory. After this victory, Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee thanked the people and fiercely surrounded the opposition parties. Apart from this, Mamta also expressed grief over the violence during the elections, along with this she said that the state government has given a free hand to the police to take action against those who are behind the violence. Mamta Banerjee lashed out at the BJP as well as the Left and the Congress.

Mamata expressed grief over the violence
CM Mamta Banerjee, referring to the violence in West Bengal, said, "I am saddened by the deaths of people in sporadic incidents of violence (during the panchayat elections)…Elections were held at 71,000 booths, but incidents of violence took place at less than 60 booths.’’ The Chief Minister claimed that 19 people, mostly from his party Trinamool Congress (TMC), were killed in poll-related violence since the election date was announced on June 8. However, police sources put the death toll at 37.

A simple target on opposition parties
Mamata Banerjee also criticized the Congress and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and accused them of being equally responsible for the election violence. He said, ‘‘I do not do politics of hatred and violence. It pains me to say that Ram (BJP), ‘Bam’ (Left parties) and ‘Shyam’ (Congress) conspired and resorted to violence. I don’t want to say much because our aim is to have unity (of non-BJP parties) at the national level.’’

Mamta Banerjee further said that ‘‘Why do you (Opposition) have so much hatred towards me? Is it because I come from a simple family background? Is it because I speak for unity?’’He thanked the people of Bengal for the Trinamool Congress’ stupendous success in rural polls and said the party was actually won by the opposition ‘spreading lies’ against it helped achieve.

Why didn’t the BJP send a team to Manipur?
Mamata targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for sending teams to the violence-hit areas. Calling it a ‘BJP protection committee’ and a ‘provocation committee’, he questioned why such teams were not sent to caste violence-hit Manipur or Agartala, where opposition workers were allegedly attacked earlier this year. Banerjee said, ‘‘Where was the fact finding team when Manipur was burning? Where was this team when Assam was burning over the National Register of Citizens (NRC)? About 154 such teams have been sent to Bengal within two years.’’
