Manipur Violence Issue: The Congress on Friday (July 7) asked whether US Ambassador Eric Garcetti should be summoned abroad for his alleged remarks on the situation in Manipur. Minister S Jaishankar will say that America has no role to play in Manipur.

Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also said that Manipur issue is India’s internal challenge and it has to be dealt with sensitivity and firmness by the people of India. Former Union Minister and Congress MP Manish Tewari said on Friday (July 7). That in the past no US ambassador has heard such comments on India’s internal affairs as the current US ambassador Eric Garcetti has reportedly made regarding the situation in Manipur.

According to reports, Garcetti had said in Kolkata on Thursday (July 6) that the violence and killings in Manipur were of ‘humanitarian concern’ and if asked by America, it is ready to cooperate with India to deal with the situation.

Jairam Ramesh said – this is India’s challenge…

Jairam Ramesh tweeted, ‘‘Will External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar summon the US ambassador and tell him clearly that America has no role in the Manipur issue? The responsibility to bring back peace and harmony in Manipur rests exclusively with the Central Government, State Government, civil society and political parties of the State.’’

Ramesh said, ‘‘The Prime Minister is silent and the Home Minister has been ineffective. It does not mean that there is any opportunity for any other country here. This is India’s challenge and we Indians have to deal with it with sensitivity and determination.’’

What did Congress leader Manish Tiwari say?

Lok Sabha member Tiwari tweeted about this, ‘‘In my public life of four decades, I have never heard that any ambassador of America has given such a statement about the internal affairs of India. We met challenges in Punjab, J&K and the Northeast and achieved success with intelligence.’’

He said that in the 1990s, when Robin Rafael made a statement on Jammu and Kashmir, the American ambassador in India used to be alert before saying anything. Rafael is a former US diplomat who handled South and Central Asia affairs.

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohammad took a dig at PM Modi

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohd. Narendra Modi. He tweeted, ‘‘The US Ambassador has said on the Manipur violence that it is a matter of humanitarian concern. When children or persons die in violence, it is not necessary to be an Indian to worry about it. It is sad that even once there was no human concern from the Prime Minister.’’

More than 120 people have lost their lives in clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. Violence first broke out on May 3 when a tribal solidarity march was held in the hill districts of the state to protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe status to the Meitei community.
