Odisha Train Accident: The major train accident in Balasore, Odisha has so far claimed the lives of 207 people and injured more than 900 people. After getting the information of this accident, everyone is shocked as to how three trains met with an accident at the same place. Sorrow has been expressed over the accident and compensation has also been announced.

According to the news agency PTI, a railway official told about the incident that several coaches of the Howrah-bound 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express derailed at Bahanaga market and fell on another track. He said, ‘‘These derailed coaches collided with 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and its coaches also overturned.’’

The official said that the coaches of the Coromandel Express collided with a goods train after derailing, due to which the goods train also came under the grip of the accident. He told that the accident happened at around 7 in the evening. At the same time, Railway spokesperson Amitabh Sharma said that first the Coromandel Express derailed and 10-12 of its coaches fell on the tracks of the Bengaluru-Howrah Express.

10 major train accidents

1. Amidst all this, this is not the first time that such a big accident has happened. Earlier, on January 13, 2022, at least 12 coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express derailed at Alipurduar in West Bengal, killing 9 people and injuring 36 others. On the other hand, in the month of October in the year 2018, on the occasion of Ravana Dahan, there was a horrific train accident in Amritsar, Punjab, in which 61 people were confirmed dead. 

2. On 23 August 2017, nine coaches of the Delhi-bound Kaifiyat Express derailed near Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh, injuring at least 70 people.

3. On 19 August 2017, the Kalinga Utkal Express running between Haridwar and Puri met with an accident near Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh. 14 bogies of the train derailed, killing 21 passengers, while 97 were injured.

4. In the year 2016, the Indore-Patna Express derailed near Pukhrayan in Kanpur. In which at least 150 people died.

5. On March 20, 2015, a major accident took place in the Janata Express going from Dehradun to Varanasi. Over 30 people were killed and around 150 others injured when the engine of a train and two bogies attached to it derailed near Bachhrawan railway station in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli.

6. On 26 May 2014, the Gorakhpur-bound Gorakhdham Express collided with a stopped goods train near Khalilabad station in Sant Kabir Nagar area of ​​Uttar Pradesh, killing 25 people and injuring over 50.

7. On 30 July 2012, a coach of the Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express caught fire near Nellore, killing over 30.

8. Prior to that, on May 22, 2012, the Hubli-Bangalore Hampi Express collided with a goods train near Andhra Pradesh. In which 25 passengers were killed and 43 people were injured.

9. The year 2012 was considered one of the worst in terms of train accidents in the history of Indian Railways. Around 14 accidents, both from train derailments to head-on collisions, were recorded this year.

10. On July 7, 2011, Chhapra-Mathura Express collided with a bus near Etah district in Uttar Pradesh. In this incident, 69 people lost their lives and many were seriously injured. The accident happened late at night at an unmanned crossing. The train was moving at high speed and the bus dragged for about half a kilometre.
