Manipur Violence: Another incident has come to light on Friday (June 9) from a village in Manipur’s Imphal West district affected by caste violence. Where the militants, disguised as security personnel, called some people out of the house on the pretext of a search operation and opened fire on them, killing three people and injuring two others.

Officials said that the incident took place in Khoken village, located on the border of Kangpoki and Imphal West districts. The militants are believed to be from the Meitei community. He said that the security forces, who were on regular patrolling of the village, reached there after hearing the gunshots, but by then the militants had fled from the area. According to officials, they shot and killed three people before fleeing. 

Special Investigation Team constituted 

Officials told that Assam Rifles have recovered the bodies of all three. Later, a joint team of Manipur Police, Assam Rifles and Army launched a search operation. A ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ against the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Meitei community in Manipur on May 3; was fired, following which violence broke out between the two communities.

Officials said on Friday (June 8) that the Central Investigation Agency (CBI) is probing six cases related to the violence handed over by the Manipur government. He informed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) rank officer has been constituted for the incident. 

10,000 troops deployed to restore peace

Significantly, violent clashes had started in Manipur after protesting the demand of the Meitei community for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. So far, about 100 people have died in this violence and more than 300 people have been injured. About 10,000 personnel of the Army and the Assam Rifles have been deployed to restore peace in the state.
