Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Case: Delhi court moves police to quash case against outgoing Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment of a minor wrestler Asked for reply on the report sent. Additional Sessions Judge Chhavi Kapoor issued notice to the victim/complainant during the in-camera hearing. The court directed him to file a reply on the police report by August 1. The court will next hear the matter on August 1.
What did the Delhi Police say?
Delhi Police on June 15 requested to quash the case registered against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. A report was filed in the court. In this, six female wrestlers were accused of sexual harassment and stalking. The minimum punishment under POCSO is three years in prison, depending on the nature of the offence.
The police had recommended the cancellation of the complaint filed by the minor wrestler against Singh citing that there was no corroborative evidence. A police statement issued said that the police has submitted a report based on the statements of the complainant (the minor’s father) and the girl herself.
What decision can the court take?
The court can decide whether to accept the closure report of the police or direct further investigation. They suspended their agitation after the government had earlier assured the agitating wrestlers, including Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Olympian Vinesh Phogat, that a chargesheet would be filed by June 15.
