Uniform Civil Code News: Politics has heated up after the Law Commission sought the opinion of common people and recognized religious organizations on Uniform Civil Code. Some political parties, including the Congress, have cornered the central government on the matter.
According to a statement released on Wednesday (June 14), the 22nd Law Commission has given 30 days to give opinion on the UCC. Interested people can share their views through website or email.
Congress accused of promoting polarization agenda
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh issued a statement on Thursday (June 15) criticizing the government for the Law Commission’s move on the Uniform Civil Code. In his statement, Jairam Ramesh said, “…attempts to hush up the issue now are to further the polarizing agenda of the Modi government and to divert attention from their clearly visible failures.”
BRS targets
Telangana Chief Minister and BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao said, “From where are they (central government) bringing religious leaders into politics? Religious gurus should run maths and worship. They (the government) are creating ruckus by intruding into it.”
TMC alleges divisive politics
It was said on behalf of TMC that the central government is doing divisive politics due to frustration. Rajya Sabha MP and TMC spokesperson Derek O’Brien wrote in a tweet, “When you can’t provide jobs, when you can’t control rising prices, when you tear apart the social fabric, when you keep every promise you make.” If you fail to do so then all you can do in your desperation is stoke the fire with your deeply divisive politics before 2024.”
JDU spokesperson KC Tyagi said this
JDU advocated efforts to build a consensus on the issue of UCC. On behalf of the party, it was said that in the context of members of different religions and communities, all the stakeholders should be taken into confidence. JDU spokesperson KC Tyagi cited a letter written by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to the then Law Commission chairman BS Chauhan in 2017, in which Nitish had said that Uniform Civil Code as a measure of reform for the welfare of the people should be seen, and not as a political instrument hurriedly implemented against their wishes and without consultation.

Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rahman Burke said that this will only spread hatred in the country. He said that the Lok Sabha elections are round the corner and elections are also to be held in some states. These people (BJP) do not have issues to talk about. The SP MP said that they (BJP) cannot say that they have done any work as they have put the country in the fire of hatred.
BJP hits back
When there was opposition on the matter, the BJP was retaliated against. The BJP alleged that the Congress has come under pressure from hardliners and is opposing the move for vote bank politics. BJP national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla on Thursday said the BJP is committed to implementing the UCC. . Poonawalla said UCC has been advocated by various courts including the Supreme Court.
BJP spokesperson said that when the UCC was upheld in Goa, there was a Congress government at that time. Referring to the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Poonawalla said that he had advocated the UCC.
