Odisha Train Accident: 288 people lost their lives in a gruesome train accident in Balasore, Odisha on June 2. After this accident, the Railway Board has ordered to implement double locking system in all its signaling assets. Not only this, the Railway Board also issued instructions to strengthen the protocol for starting the train movement. 

The horrific train accident in Balasore has raised questions on the security system of the railways, since then the railways is alert. On Saturday, the board ordered the implementation of double-locking arrangements for all relay rooms along with train control systems, relay huts housing signaling and telecommunications.

In fact, the order indicated that in the Balasore train accident, access to the relay room had interfered with the signaling system, causing the Coromandel Express to go into the loop line and hit a stationary goods train, leading to the entire accident.  Senior officials said there was enough evidence to show that the interlocking system was tampered with, so now the mechanism has to be made tamper-proof. This double locking will ensure that no one can access these places without permission.

According to the PTI agency, it has been said in the order that the level crossing gate (gumti / cabin), signaling room and telecommunication equipment will be relayed in the station yard. Hut and unless double-lock arrangement is provided, the key of the existing single lock will remain with the Station Master. Along with this, the order further states that relevant entries should be maintained regarding issue and deposit of keys by the station master, as in the station relay room.

The order said that the proforma for taking back the key from the Assistant Station Manager (ASM) on duty shall have a column specifying that the space for which the key was taken over by the maintenance staff should be properly closed. has been done and locked by the maintenance staff. 

Officials said that one aspect that has emerged from the preliminary investigation is that some work was going on near the accident site. He said that a disconnection memo (to close the interlocking system and start work) and a reconnection memo (reconnection of the system indicating the end of work) had been received by the station manager. However, in reality, the technician bypassed the system as the work was not completed and gave a ‘‘green signal’&rsquo for the Coromandel Express, he added. manipulated the location box to receive.
