Agartala Jul 05: Standing in solidarity with the MBBS students, the All India Democratic Students Organization (AIDSO), Tripura state unit on Wednesday, staged a protest opposing the NExT exam.

Demanding withdrawal of the regulations, the left student outfit argued it to be a violation of the NMC Act 2019 and also claimed lack of clarity regarding exam schedule.

Speaking to the reporters, AIDSO state secretary Ramprasad Acharjee said, “The sudden imposition of NExT examination is putting extra pressure on the students, especially those who are in mid-session. This is also a scheme to loot money from the future doctors in the name of mock-tests, online coaching and others”.

Taking up a week-long protest program against the decision of the government, AIDSO raised three point demands. This includes; The National Exit Test should not be imposed on MBBS final year students, No Fees should be collected from medical students in the name of mock test and Under no circumstances should medical education be handed over to private owners.

State president, AIDSO, Mridul Kanti Sarkar said, “The government has announced to implement NExT exam mid-session on the current final year MBBS batch of 2019. The purpose, process and necessity of the exam is unclear to many”.

“It rather seems to be a coaching business based on medical education and the Rs 2,000 examination fee for mock tests is another despicable burden on the students”, he added.

Notably, the government has already released a gazette notification on National Medical Commission’s (NMC) National Exit Test Regulations 2023 for the forthcoming NExT examination according to which it will be basis of certifying the eligibility of the medical graduate to register to practice the modern system of medicine in the country and will also serve as a Licentiate examination.

However, since the announcement, MBBS students and medical professionals across the country as well as in the state of Tripura have been opposing the NExT exam.

Earlier, on July 01, the students of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) staged a protest opposing the NExT exam and observed ‘Doctor’s Day’ as ‘Black Day’.
