Agartala, July 12: Three separate farmers’ organisations under the banner of the CPI-M party on Wednesday staged a ‘Bidhansabha Abhiyan’ here at Agartala to press for upliftment of the socio-economic status of the farmers in the state.

Hundreds of farmers under the banner of the state committee of All India Kishan Sabha, Tripura Khet Mazdoor Union, and Tripura Rajya Ganamukti Parishad, participated in the protest demonstration. The rally commenced from the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan area, with participants marching through the streets of the capital city, raising slogans against the government.

The protesters emphasized the need for an increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for farmers’ produce as input costs have risen. They also highlighted that rising input costs, combined with an unfair MSP, are leading to indebtedness among various categories of farmers, especially small, marginal, middle, and tenant farmers.

Underlining the 15-point charter of demands of the farmers’ organizations, the CPI-M leader Pabitra Kar, who led the rally castigated the ruling BJP led coalition government and alleged that during the last five years of their rule in Tripura, the government did nothing for the upliftment of the agriculture sector of the state and also failed to enhance the income of the farmers.

The 15-point charter of demands based on which the rally was held include – Resumption and ensure adequate works under MGNREGA and TUEP, increase establishment of paddy procurement centres covering the ADC areas of the state, increase of wages of agricultural workers and ensure legal guarantees, ensure government assistance for the construction of the habitants of all landless and homeless khet mazdoor families and jhumias, empower TTAADC under the 6th Schedule of the 125th amendment act, inclusion of Kok-Borok language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution, and others.

The protesters were halted near the North Gate area by the police as they attempted to submit their memorandum to the Chief Minister at the Assembly.
