Manipur Violence: Violence continues in Manipur. Meanwhile, four people, including a Manipur police commando and a 17-year-old boy, were killed in clashes between two communities in Kangwai area of Bishnupur district on the intervening night of Thursday (July 6) and Friday (July 7).
The Indian Express quoted officials as saying that in the area where people from both the communities live side by side, security forces have created a ‘buffer zone’ to prevent the situation from worsening. Despite the firing took place during the night.
How did these three people die in Manipur
Officials said that a mob came down from the hill at night and tried to burn down some villages in the valley. He told that this mob had gathered from outside the area and did not retreat despite the requests of the local people to go back. The security forces responded in an orderly manner and prevented the miscreants from setting any house on fire.
Some people from both sides, however, fired at each other from the standoff areas of Kangwai, Songdo and Awang Lekhai villages, resulting in the death of three people on both sides and injuries to several people on both sides. According to the Indian Express, two of these three belonged to the Kuki community, while the 17-year-old boy killed, M Rikki, belonged to the Meitei community.
Officials said though the firing stopped in the early hours of Friday, the mob on the valley side continued to block the movement of security forces to strengthen the presence in the area.
Police commando killed
Officials said that the resentment, however, continued to grow and intermittent firing continued even during the day. The police commando was killed in an encounter with suspected terrorists at Moirang Turel Mesan late Friday evening, officials said.
The police commando has been identified as Pukhrambam Ranbir. The commando sustained bullet injuries in his head during the exchange of fire. Officials said he was first taken to the district hospital, from where he was referred to a hospital in Imphal, but died on the way. < /p>
When did the violence start in Manipur?
The ‘Tribal Solidarity Rally’ held in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. After the removal, caste violence broke out in the state on May 3. So far more than 120 people have lost their lives and more than 3,000 people have been injured.
Around 40,000 personnel have been deployed along with the Manipur Police to control the violence and restore normalcy in the state.
