Jammu Kashmir Land For Landless Scheme: In Jammu and Kashmir, a political tussle has started over the administration’s decision to give five marlas of land to the landless people under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). After Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti questioned the decision, other political parties in the valley also questioned the move. Also demanded clarity regarding the beneficiaries from the Lieutenant Governor.
National Conference vice-president and former state CM Omar Abdullah said on Friday (7 Friday) that the government should clarify who they are counting among the homeless. Do the homeless also include those who came here a week ago? Is there any cut-off date? He emphasized that those who have come to Jammu and Kashmir after 2019 should not be included in these lists.
What did Omar Abdullah say?
Omar Abdullah said that after 2019, they (government) have tried to settle many people here. If the intention is to provide land to such persons, it will definitely raise doubts in our mind. The government should first clarify how they are counting the homeless.
Mehbooba Mufti made these allegations
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday (July 6) accused the government of trying to bring one million people to Jammu and Kashmir in the name of houses for the homeless. He said who are these landless people? Who are these homeless people? There is no count of these homeless people. The government was talking that investment will come from outside and instead of investment, they have started bringing people from outside in J&K.
Landless in Jammu and Kashmir fighting for land
People’s Conference President Sajjad Lone demanded to clarify the eligibility criteria for this scheme and not include the person who came here after 5 August 2019. He said that now when the questions are being raised, it would be prudent for the administration to clarify whether only domicile holders prior to August 5, 2019 are involved in giving land to the landless and homeless. It has been claimed that no new person will be included in the list of Rural Development Department, but clarification is necessary.
What did the administration say?
The Jammu and Kashmir administration says that the statements of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti are factually incorrect and she has no understanding of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana scheme. The administration said the government conducted the Awaas+ survey during January 2018 to March 2019 to identify those beneficiaries who had claimed to be left out under the 2011 Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC).
