Maharashtra Politics Crisis: BJP Lok Sabha elections Before 2024, it is believed that it was successful in breaking into NCP as well. In June 2022, BJP broke the MLAs of Shiv Sena, as a result of which Eknath Shinde became the Chief Minister of the state. It is now believed that BJP has also been successful in wooing most of the MLAs of NCP led by Sharad Pawar as it is being said that 40 MLAs are supporting Ajit Pawar. Ajit Pawar took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Saturday (July 1).
Ajit Pawar has made it clear that he will contest the election on the symbol of NCP only. The NCP has 54 MLAs in Maharashtra and according to the anti-defection law, it is mandatory to have the support of two-thirds of the MLAs for a separate faction. In the event of a separate faction, Ajit Pawar would need the support of 36 MLAs. If further developments translate into a separate faction of Ajit Pawar, it will be seen as a successful attempt to ‘break in’ by the BJP.
How did the BJP break in?
The ambition of power and the longing to fulfill it gives rise to the possibilities of future political developments. Many times, in an attempt to give shape to the possibilities, dissatisfaction takes place and this dissatisfaction turns into a possibility for the opposing parties. In the developments in Maharashtra, something similar has been seen first with Shiv Sena and then with NCP.
BJP focused on the disgruntled leaders of the opposition parties and tried to woo them. However, Ajit Pawar has said that he has taken this decision to support the national interest and development, in which the satisfaction and support of the majority of the MLAs won him. We have achieved and will do whatever is necessary for the progress of Maharashtra.
‘This operation was done using agencies’
He said, “I want to give credit for this to PM Modi. He had given a statement two days ago and after that statement some people started feeling uncomfortable, some of them were also facing ED action. Used enforcement agencies to intimidate their leaders and drag them into their favour.
What happened to Shiv Sena in 2022?
BJP and Shiv Sena were together before the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections. Both contested the election in alliance. BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena 56, NCP 54 and Congress 44 in the elections. After the election, there was no alliance between BJP and Shiv Sena regarding the post of Chief Minister and both the parties parted ways. The majority mark for the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly is 145. Now any party had to face this challenge to form the government.
On November 23, 2019 also there was a big upheaval. Ajit Pawar had given support to BJP. Devendra Fadnavis had become the Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar the Deputy CM, but then Sharad Pawar had given a shock to Ajit Pawar’s move saying that his (Ajit’s) decision was personal and not that of the party. He had stopped the MLAs from supporting Ajit. When the Supreme Court asked for a majority test, Fadnavis had already resigned due to lack of numbers. He was able to remain CM only for 72 hours.
On the other hand Shiv Sena joined with NCP and Congress on the condition of CM post and formed a new alliance – Mahavikas Aghadi. The government of Mahavikas Aghadi was formed and Uddhav Thackeray became the CM. In those days, a change was seen in the staunch Hindutva stance of the Shiv Sena, which was following the coalition dharma. Ideological differences started arising within the Shiv Sena itself. Some people accused Uddhav Thackeray of not leading the Shiv Sena according to Balasaheb’s thinking, including Eknath Shinde. The BJP was keeping an eye on the turmoil within the party.
Breach in MVA
On 21 June 2022, Eknath Shinde reached Gujarat with 35 MLAs of Shiv Sena. The next day he reached Guwahati with the MLAs and told that 40 MLAs would be with him. On 29 June, the Supreme Court ordered that a floor test be held on 30 June. Uddhav Thackeray did not bother to do the majority test and resigned in a press conference on 29th June itself. Eknath Shinde took oath as Chief Minister and Devendra Fadnavis as Deputy Chief Minister. Even then it was believed that the BJP had made a dent in the AVA.
