Tripura’s century-old Kharchi Puja set to begin from June 26 – aabtak24

Agartala, June 20: The century-old traditional Kharchi Puja is all set to commence at Chaturdash Devta Temple in Khayerpur under West Tripura district from June 26 next. 

Local MLA and Chairman of Kharchi Puja and Mela Committee- Rata Chakraborty chaired a preparatory meeting for organizing the week-long festival at the conference hall of West Tripura District Magistrate’s office on Tuesday. 

Some important decisions were taken in the meeting for smooth conduct of the festival. Chakraborty asked all the line departments to complete their preparations by June 24 next. He also sought cooperation from all. 

The Kharchi festival represents worship of 14 deities– Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Laxmi, Saraswati, Kartik, Ganesha, Brahma, Abadhi, Chandra, Ganga, Agni, Kamdev and Himadri.

As per the tradition, the week-long festival begins with a colourful procession—Snan Yatra of 14 deities in the Howrah river. 

The preparations for illuminations in temple premises including Haveli Park, Museum and Lake have already started. Besides, necessary steps are being taken for distribution of temporary stalls for Kharchi mela. 

In view of the gathering the Kharchi festival draws every year, full-proof security arrangements including CCTV surveillance would be placed to avoid any untoward incident during the festival. 

Security personnel along with volunteers of Civil Defence, Scout and Guide in adequate numbers would be deployed. Besides, medical facilities and ambulance service would be made available. 

Like previous years, cultural programmes with participation of local and other artists would be a major attraction for the visitors. 

Paschim Tripura Zilla Sabhadhipati (in-charge) Haridulal Acharjee, Deputy Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Manika Das Dutta, chairman of Old Agartala Panchayat Samity Biswajit Shil, West Tripura District Magistrate Debapriya Bardhan and other officials were present in the final preparatory meeting.
