West Bengal Panchayat Election: Governor CV Anand Bose met Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the violence during the Panchayat elections in West Bengal. The governor had visited
15 people had died in the violence during the panchayat elections in West Bengal. Bose visited several areas in West Bengal, especially North 24 Parganas district, and took stock of the situation during the polling. He also met the family of an injured person and went to the hospital to inquire about the condition of the injured.
Fierce violence, ballot boxes looted
On Saturday, July 8, there was widespread violence during the voting for the three-tier panchayat elections in West Bengal at more than 61,000 polling stations. During the violence, ballot boxes were looted at many places, set on fire or thrown into ponds. In West Bengal, re-polling was held on Monday, July 10, for the panchayat elections in about 700 polling stations (booths) in 19 districts where the polling was declared invalid. However, no major untoward incident was reported from anywhere. Hundreds of security forces were deployed for this.
High Court orders
The Calcutta High Court has asked the Inspector General (IG) of the Border Security Force (BSF), the nodal officer appointed for the deployment of central forces in the West Bengal Panchayat elections, to conduct all polling on July 8. Instructed to file a report regarding the violence at the centres. The High Court also directed the state government to provide assistance to the next of kin of those killed in the alleged election violence and provide medical facilities to the injured.
