Agartala June 07: Pressing for Roman Script for Kokborok language, a sit in protest was organized on Wednesday in North Gate area of the capital city under the initiative of Roman Script for Kokborok Choba, a conglomeration of 56 organizations.
Briefing about the details over the motto of protest, Chairman, Roman Script for Kokborok Choba, Bikash Debbarma said, “Representatives and members of 56 organizations have taken part in the day’s sit-in protest demonstration with a single demand and that is Roman script for Kokborok”.
Demanding the state government and its concerned authorities to stop language discrimination, he said, “Kokborok is our language and the people speaking the language are the real stakeholders for taking decisions. Hence, the choice of script must be our decision too”.
Debbarma further said, “In the year 1979, Tripura assembly passed a bill to declare Kokborok as an official language of the state. But till date nothing has been done to develop the language”.
“Script is utmost important for any language, but neither the present government of that in the past could take any concrete decision regarding this”, he added.
The chairman of the joint body further said, “During the time of CPI-M government a committee was formed for the third time and the survey report says that at least 67.08% people want Roman script for Kokborok. But 2004-2023, nothing has been done for the implementation of people’s mandate who are the real stakeholders of the language”.
The leaders further threatened to launch an extensive movement in the coming days if the government fails to fulfill their demand.
