Agartala Jun 14: Chaos broke out in the city on Wednesday over the submission of deputation to the Governor demanding the use of Roman Script for writing the Kokbarok CBSE examination.
Students’ wing, TISF, of the Opposition TIPRA Motha Party organized a rally at Vivekananda Maidan and marched forward to submit the deputation to the Governor.
However, midway, Police put up a barricade preventing the rally from moving further. This led to a scuffle between the Police and the students. Later Police resorted to tear gas firing and also used water canons, claimed the agitating students.
In the melee, several students were reported to sustain injuries.
Opposition leader Animesh Debbarma and ADC CEM Purnachandra Jamatia went to the GB Hospital to inquire about the health conditions of the injured agitators.
Speaking to the media, Debbarma said, three students were injured and are undergoing treatment at the GB Hospital – one of them was put on oxygen.
Condemning the attack on the ‘peaceful’ demonstrators, the Opposition leader asked as to why Police resorted to firing tear gas and using water canons.
“Normally, an announcement is made before taking such actions. There were no such warnings or announcements. Moreover, the rally was peaceful”, he commented.
Debbarma demanded a high-level inquiry into the Police action and stern action against the persons responsible for today’s incident. He also urged the government to ensure proper treatment for the injured demonstrators.
