People turned violent after two people died in firing in Manipur, police fired tear gas shells -aabtak24

Manipur Violence: Amidst the claims of Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister N Biren Singh, news of violence is once again coming out from Manipur. In the continuous firing, two people died due to bullet injuries, after which the situation worsened further. People started protesting and the security forces had to fight hard to disperse the crowd. For this, the police released tear gas shells in Imphal on the evening of Thursday, 29 June. At the same time, there is a lot of ruckus regarding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Manipur. 

People demonstrated with the dead body
Actually, the body of a man killed in a shootout in Kangpokpi district was placed at a square in Imphal and kept in a traditional coffin. Officials said that the protesters gathered and the mob threatened to take out a procession with the coffin till the Chief Minister’s residence. Meanwhile, an office of the Bharatiya Janata Party was also attacked. Let us inform that two suspected rioters were killed and five others were injured in an encounter with security personnel in Haraothel village of Kangpokpi district in Manipur on Thursday morning. 

Officials said that later, members of the community to which both the rioters belong, tried to take out a procession with their bodies to the chief minister’s residence in Imphal. The procession turned violent when the police stopped them from reaching the Chief Minister’s residence. After which the police had to use lathicharge and tear gas and after a long struggle the situation was brought under control. 

Controversy due to Rahul Gandhi’s arrival
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is also on a two-day tour of violence-scoring Manipur. Rahul Gandhi visited relief camps in violence-hit Manipur’s Churachandpur and met people. During this, Rahul Gandhi was stopped near the airport, after which he had to reach the relief camps by helicopter. Rahul Gandhi said, ‘‘An environment of peace in Manipur should be our only priority.’’ 

Allegations leveled against each other
There was a lot of controversy over the stopping of Rahul Gandhi’s convoy. The Congress alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government was trying to sabotage the party (Congress) leader’s visit. The BJP, on the other hand, claimed that Gandhi was asked to go by helicopter as his visit was opposed by several sections, but he was adamant on traveling by road.

Let us tell you that more than 100 people have died in the ethnic violence that broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur in the beginning of May. A ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in Manipur. Clashes started after the event.
