New Delhi, Jun 10: The Centre has constituted a peace committee in Manipur under the chairpersonship of Governor Anusuiya Uikey to facilitate the peacemaking process among various ethnic groups.
The Committee, which comprises Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, some State Ministers, MPs, MLAs and leaders from different political parties, will hold peaceful dialogue and negotiations among conflicting parties and groups, an official release said here.
The mandate of the Committee is also to strengthen social cohesiveness, mutual understanding and facilitate cordial communication among various ethnic groups. Former civil servants, educationists, litterateurs, artists, social workers and representatives of different ethnic groups are also part of the Committee.
Last month during his visit to Manipur, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the constitution of the Peace Committee after taking stock of the situation.
The CBI has formed the SIT and taken over the investigation in the cases of arson and violence that broke out in the northeastern state after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. Tribals Nagas and Kukis constitute another 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill districts.
Around 100 people have lost their lives and more than 300 were injured ever since the ethnic violence broke out over a month ago.
