Oommen Chandy Death: Former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy passed away on Tuesday (July 18). Before his death, Chandy had expressed his desire to be cremated like a common man. Because of which his body will be buried without state honors on Thursday.
Former Chief Minister Chandy’s mortal remains will be buried with Christian rites tomorrow at his church at Puthuppally in Kottayam. Normally former chief ministers are cremated with state honours, including gun salutes, but this will not be the case for Chandy.
He had expressed his desire to be cremated like a common man
Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said that before his death, Chandy had expressed his wish to his family that he should be cremated after his death. Be buried like a common man. The Congress leader said, ‘‘He had expressed his desire for the last rites for himself like a common man. His family is fulfilling that wish.’’
A source in the government said that Chandy’s family had written a letter to the chief secretary, expressing their desire to be buried like a common man, without state honours. All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and MLA PC Vishnunath said the state government has accepted the request of the late leader’s family.
Earlier in 2010, veteran Congress leader and four-time Chief Minister of Kerala K. Karunakaran was cremated with full state honours. At the same time, religious rituals were not followed before the funeral of Left leaders and Chief Ministers- EMS Namboodiripad and EK Nayanar, but their last rites were also performed with full state honors.
Both died in 1998 and 2004 respectively. Preparations are underway at Puthupalli Orthodox Church in Kottayam district for Chandy’s last rites.
