Teliamura, July 06: A 52-year-old Vaisnava woman died in a road accident when she was hit by a 10-wheeler oil tank carrier at Teliamura on Thursday afternoon. She was a resident of Ranirbazar Mohanpur.
The deceased, Uma Rani Debnath Goswami was a Vaishnavite. On Thursday afternoon she along with her husband Subodh Chandra Debnath and three other vaishnavites went to Teliamura to attend a Vaishnav Seba. As they got down from the vehicle at the Ampi chowmuhani in Teliamura and were trying to board a tomtom, the speeding Oil tanker hit them from behind. While others managed to escape, Uma Rani was crushed to death.
The fire service team rushed her to the Teliamura Sub-division hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. The truck escaped from the spot immediately, but later in the evening, driver Jitendra Pal along with co-driver Dulal Malakar surrendered to the Teliamura police.
Local people vented anger at the ‘frequent’ road accident in the Ampi Chowmuhani area and blamed the traffic department.
“The Traffic lights remained non-functional for almost a year – however, the traffic department has not taken any initiative to repair and restore the lighting system. Lack of traffic signals is one of the main reasons for frequent accidents in the area”, locals alleged.
