Agartala Jun 11: Manipuri people staying in the State hit the street with a candlelight demonstration and sit-in protest in Agartala on Sunday. The demonstration was organized with a plea for restoring peace and normalcy in their home state – Manipur riddled with ethnic unrest.
The candlelight demonstration was jointly organized by the Puthiba Welfare and Cultural Society and the All Tripura Meitei Community. Members of the Manipuri community, residing in Tripura for educational, employment, and other purposes, actively participated in the event held at Aboynagar on the outskirts of the capital city.
Thousands of men and women participated in the demonstration, holding placards, banners, and voicing slogans. They strongly condemned the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur since May 3, expressing solidarity with the affected families and victims of the conflict. Besides, they demanded intervention of the State and Central governments for restoring normalcy.
“We are demanding immediate action from both the state and Central governments to stop the killings of innocent people and restore peace and stability in Manipur. We are also appealing to civil society organizations to play a constructive role during this critical period”, the demonstrators said.
Participants held candles and placards with slogans like ‘no separate administration’ and ‘save territorial integrity of Manipur.’ They strongly advocated for the revival of harmonious coexistence among all communities, as seen in the past.
In Tripura, approximately 30,000 Manipuri individuals, predominantly from the Meitei (Meetei) community, have been residing for several decades.
