Train Accident in History: The gruesome train accident in Balasore, Odisha has shaken the nation. So far 288 people have died in the collision of three trains. More than 1100 people have been injured. An inquiry committee has been constituted regarding the accident, whose report has been claimed by the Railway Minister to come soon. The opposition is attacking the Modi government for the worst train accident in two decades and is demanding the removal of the railway minister. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at the  rail accidents that took place during the tenure of three well-known railway ministers before the Modi government came to power at the Centre.

Mamata Banerjee

When West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee became the railway minister for the first time, it was the NDA government. In 1999, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee assigned him the Railway Ministry. In 2009, he again got a chance to handle the ministry in UPA-2 led by Manmohan Singh. There were 54 train accidents when Mamta Banerjee was the railway minister. 1451 people died in these accidents. Along with this, there were 839 incidents of train derailment during Mamta Banerjee’s tenure.

Nitish Kumar

The current Bihar CM and JDU leader Nitish Kumar is also the first Bar became the railway minister in the Atal government itself. In 1999, during the very first term of Nitish Kumar, there was a major train accident in Gasal, in which 285 people died. Taking responsibility for the accident, he resigned from the post. The special thing is that only two ministers left their posts because of the train accident. The first was Lal Bahadur Shastri. 

In 2001, once again Nitish got the Railway Ministry, on which he remained till 2004. During his tenure there were 79 rail accidents in which 1527 people died. There were 1000 incidents of train derailment when Nitish was Railway Minister.

Lalu Prasad Yadav

Lalu Prasad Yadav was appointed as Railway Minister in the first UPA government led by Manmohan Singh. Was made a minister. He had completed the full 5 years tenure. There were fewer accidents in railways during Lalu’s tenure as compared to the above two. A total of 51 accidents took place during Lalu’s tenure, in which 1159 people lost their lives. It was much less than that of Nitish and Mamta. At the same time, Lalu’s tenure was very good even in the case of train derailment. There were only 550 incidents of train derailment during this period.
