West Bengal Panchayat Election: Nandigram in West Bengal will once again see a tough fight, where the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and various opposition parties are trying their best to win the upcoming panchayat elections. CM Mamta Banerjee had to face defeat in a close fight with her rival Subhendu Adhikari in the assembly elections.
Will Nandigram teach a lesson to BJP in the panchayat elections?
East Medinipur Zilla Parishad Vice President Sheikh Sufiyan said, for us, the challenge is to get back the lost land in Nandigram, as it is our There is no other place but a political pilgrimage for all those who believe in the ideology of Mamata Banerjee. BJP had won the assembly constituency in an unethical way. But, Nandigram will teach a lesson to BJP this time.
What is TMC’s strategy for Nandigram?
The party won the 2013 and 2018 rural elections with huge margins, while the last one went largely uncontested. However, the defeat by Shubhendu Adhikari, who left TMC and joined BJP in 2021, is still like a tease for the ruling party. Blocks one and two of Nandigram have about 40 and 17 per cent minority population respectively and TMC has decided to field new faces on 80 per cent seats, which has been opposed by many senior party leaders. The decision has led to many party leaders contesting as independents, exposing cracks in the party.
According to party sources, the decision to field new faces was taken after reports of corruption in gram sabhas and the functioning of its leaders and office bearers. A TMC leader contesting as an independent said, ‘Does the party think that the candidates it has fielded are all saints and we are all thieves? Most of the people who were given tickets are corrupt agents of BJP. The party will have to bear the brunt of neglecting its tried and tested workers.’’
What did the BJP say about the Nandigram incident?
BJP’s former Medinipur district committee member Abhijit Maity said that the party has to repeat the results of the 2021 assembly elections in the region. Bharwas, when it won the seat by a slim margin of around 1,900 votes. He said, ‘‘This time TMC will be defeated in the panchayat elections. We are ready for his challenge to get back Nandigram. He will have to answer for the corruption in the last 15 years.’’
Since 2016, BJP’s mass base has increased continuously here. The party came third in the 2016 bypoll to the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat, securing over 1.96 lakh votes. Lok Sabha elections, the BJP strengthened its position, with its candidate getting over 5.34 lakh votes. After this, it won Nandigram and six other assembly constituencies in the district in the 2021 assembly elections.
The officer, who was trusted by Mamata Banerjee during the Nandigram movement, joined the BJP in December 2020 and defeated Banerjee in the 2021 assembly elections.
What is the position of the CPI(M) in the West Bengal elections?
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) is also making a full push this time, where the party won almost 70 percent of the village council seats for the first time in 10 years. But has been able to field its candidate. In Nandigram, CPI(M) leader Ibdul Hussain said, ‘‘We will do well in the elections. We are fighting against the corruption of TMC.
