Agartala, July 1: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday warned that his government would not tolerate attack on doctors and other medical staff.
He was speaking at National Doctor’s Day programme in the city in reference to the recent attack on Dr. Satyajit Datta of Kanika Memorial PHC, Kailashahar by a patient party. The Chief Minister said, police already took action into incident. He also sent a strong message saying that stern action would be taken if such incidents take place.
“An incident of attack on a doctor took place recently. I received a late-night call from a doctor informing me about the incident. Without delay, I contacted the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Director General of Police (DGP). Our government will not tolerate such hooliganism against doctors. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack. Previously, such incidents were prevalent, but I can assure you that strict action will now be taken against the culprits”, said Dr Saha.
He further said that doctors dedicate themselves to providing round-the-clock services, and the current government is actively visiting hospitals to identify any loopholes and work towards their improvement.
“The allocation for health department in the state budget is 10 percent and we are considering ro increase the allocation. We will not compromise on healthcare. Doctors are instrumental in saving lives, and it is our duty to support them,” the Chief Minister Said
Previously, there were no specific regulations regarding specialist doctors in the health service sector, but we have addressed this issue. The present state government’s focus is on serving the people and overall development of the healthcare sector. Over the past 35 years, we have observed that some individuals used to prioritize party affiliation over being a good human being. We have moved beyond that mentality. We do not expect doctors to be associated with our party; instead, we believe that respect should be earned through one’s competence and work ethic, he added.
Dr. Saha expressed that the doctors often feel irritated due to the higher loads of patients. He said, the state government is making efforts to reduce the patient load in state hospitals while simultaneously enhancing healthcare services through the introduction of modern technologies.
He also invited the doctors to provide their suggestions on how the government can further improve the health system.
During the programme, the Chief Minister honoured some of the renowned doctors and other medical staff for their outstanding contributions in healthcare.
Vice-chairman of Innovation and Transformation Aayog Dr. Ashok Sinha, Health secretary Dr. Debashis Basu, former MLA Dr. Dilip Kumar Das and others were present in the programme.
