Agartala June 21: The state has sufficient quantity of foodgrains and pulses for the next months to come in view of the monsoon season, said Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Choudhury.
The Minister said this on Wednesday after he chaired a crucial meeting with the presidents, secretaries and other representatives of various markets in the capital city in a bid to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities throughout the state during the monsoon season.
In the meeting, the food minister laid special emphasis on the issues such as creation of artificial shortage of daily necessities in the markets during the monsoon season and taking strict measures to prevent black marketing.
Speaking in this context, Choudhury said, “The present state government is sincere towards public welfare. Common people will be subjected to various problems if food supply is disrupted because of any reason. And therefore, the state government is keeping a close eye to ensure that people do not face any sort of hardships in procurement of daily necessities”.
“Rice, pulses and other essential commodities are mainly controlled through public distribution system and markets”, he said.
Detailing the stocks, the food minister said, “The state has 86 days of rice, 57 days of wheat, 28 days of salt and 24 days of sugar under the public distribution system. Besides, markets have a stock of rice for 47 days, pulses for 42 days, edible oil for 112 days, potatoes for 47 days, flour for 63 days, sugar for 35 days and salt for 50 days”.
There is no critical situation of stocking essential commodities in the state, said Sushanta Choudhury.
He added, “Strict measures will be taken if the prices of essential commodities are increased by creating a situation of artificial crisis in the state during the monsoon season”.
The minister further asked the wholesale and retail traders to provide proper cash memos at the time of selling goods.
“The task force and the food department authorities shall conduct regular raids in the markets and an account of daily stock will be kept accordingly”, he said.
Choudhury further directed the SDM and food department officials to take immediate action on spotting black marketing anywhere.
Apart from the Food Minister and market representatives of different markets of the state capital, Director, Food Department Nirmal Adhikari, Additional Transport Commissioner Ajit Debnath remained present at the day’s meeting.
