Meghalaya District Council Panel: The NPP, the party leading Meghalaya’s ruling coalition, has given a jolt to its ally UDP in the executive committee of the local district council. The NPP has joined hands with the opposition Congress to oust coalition partner UDP.

This development is considered very interesting in the politics of Meghalaya, because there is an alliance of NPP and UDP in the Meghalaya government. Following this development, a leader of the NPP has become the head of the executive committee of an autonomous district council.

UDP in minority
Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council member of the National People’s Party (NPP), Pinayed Sing Sayim, led a rebellion against the United Democratic Alliance executive committee led by Titostarvel Chine Did. As a result, the UDP was reduced to a minority in the 30-member house on Monday.

NPP’s Bajop Pingrop brought no-confidence motion
National People’s Party’s Bajop Pingrop brought this no-confidence motion, on which the executive committee led by Chine in the Autonomous District Council after its defeat during the vote lost its majority. Khasi Hills Democratic Front (KHDF) chief Syiem was on Tuesday (June 20) sworn in as the chief executive member.

NPP-Congress alliance
There was no other contender for this post. A leader of the NPP has become the head of the executive committee of an autonomous district council. The NPP-Congress alliance has been named KHDF to run the council. The five-year term of the current council is till the beginning of next year.

The Congress has defended its decision to support the NPP in the Council. Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly R.V. Lyngdoh said that the party (Congress) is supporting the NPP in the council to protect the interests of the tribal people of the state. Had we not supported the NPP, the reins of the Council would have probably been handed over to the Administrator in case no party had a sufficient majority.
