These four accused are said to belong to Meitei, the dominant caste of Manipur.
Half of Manipur’s population belongs to the Meitei community
The population of Manipur is around 31 lakhs. Out of which 50 percent are of Meitei caste alone. They have dominance in every field. This caste lives mainly in the Imphal Valley. According to the law of Manipur, people of the Meitei community cannot live on the mountains. Only people of Kuki and Naga tribes can live there. The people of the Meitei community are also economically more prosperous. On the other hand, if we talk about the victimized women, she comes from the tribal Kuki tribe. Apart from this, the Naga tribe has a large population here. These two castes have 40 percent share in the population. Apart from this, 34 other tribes also live on the mountains.
Delay in unfolding of the incident
Before the incident of making women roam naked, there was a fierce struggle between Meitei and Kuki tribes. The people of Kuki community were taking out a rally protesting against the status of Scheduled Tribes to the Meitei community. Because of this, he had a bloody struggle with the Meitei community, in which 150 people have been killed so far. To bring the situation under control, the government had to shut down the internet along with deploying the central police force. Internet was closed in Manipur and Imphal Valley since May 3. Due to which the video of this incident was made on the same day, but it could not go viral. Now when the internet service started again, the chaotic elements made it viral. However, the central government has now banned this video on social media.
