Dharmanagar, June 27: Protesting the bad condition of a 2.5-km stretch of road, villagers blocked the Dharmanagar-Kadmatala main highway for the last 24 hours near Shonarer basha area on Tuesday morning.
The blockade led to huge traffic congestion, while police reached the spot after being informed, but failed to convince the villagers to lift their protest.
“There are several craters on the mud-filled road, while the rains have made matters worse. Motorcycles, rickshaws and even bicycles are not able to cross the road as the mud is almost knee-deep. Even those who fall ill in the villagers have to be taken to the health centre on someone’s shoulders as ambulances too cannot travel on the road,” said the locals. According to them, the condition has remained the same for the last 25 years.
The villagers have knocked the doors of all officials and politicians to improve the condition of the road but all their efforts were in vain.
District collector Sanjib Das visited the spot to convince the villagers but he failed to do so. Protestors informed the authorities that the protest will only be withdrawn when the District Magistrate or the chief engineer assure them of reconstruction of the road very soon.
