Agartala Jul 13: Decks are ready for International Air Connectivity in the MBB Airport and flights between Agartala and Chittagong will commence very soon, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury informed the Assembly on Thursday.
He said, “The project is in a matured stage and anytime it may become operational. The delay in commencing the service is due to Immigration related issues. However, now the commencement is just a matter of time”.
Replying to a question, the Transport Minister also said, the State Government will pay Rs 15 crore as a gap fund to Spicejet Airlines and out of the total amount Rs 3 crore 75 lakh had already been paid. Notably, Spicejet will provide air services between Agartala and Chittagong.
In reply to another question related to the Kailashahar Airport, Chowdhury said Kailashahar is one of the oldest Airports in India and the airport remained functional till 1989. Vayudut was providing air services there. The length of the runway is 1150 meters. At present, it is used as a Helipad.
The Minister detailed the various initiatives of the State government and Civil Aviation Ministry to restore air services in Kailashahar and total 5 times tenders under the UDAN Scheme were invited in vain.
Lastly, an important meeting was held between the Chief Minister and the Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ministry on 24 April last and it was learnt, two airlines – Spirit Air and Alliance Air – agreed to operate. Spirit Air agreed to operate between Kailashahar-Agartala-Kailashahar while Alliance Air will operate between Kailashahar-Kolkata-Kailashahar.
