Sharad Pawar: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar is currently going through difficulties both politically and familially. Amid political rebellion by nephew Ajit Pawar and advice to retire, Sharad Pawar has responded with the lines of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Sharad Pawar said, "While handing over the command of the party to Lal Krishna Advani, Vajpayee ji had said – I am neither tired nor retired, but now move towards victory under the leadership of Advani ji." Sharad Pawar’s reference was to Ajit Pawar’s statement in which he raised questions about the age and health of the NCP president. Earlier, Sharad Pawar had said that he is still effective whether he turns 82 or 92.
What did Ajit Pawar say about Sharad Pawar’s retirement?
Ajit Pawar, at a meeting of his fellow rebel leaders, MLAs and party workers in Mumbai on Wednesday (July 5) Said, "You made me a villain in front of everyone. I still have a lot of respect for you… But you tell me, IAS officers retire at 60, leaders in BJP retire at 75 – like LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi Examples are in front of you, which gave the new generation a chance to move forward."
On Sunday (July 2), Ajit Pawar took oath as the deputy CM of the state, joining hands with the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition government in Maharashtra. Along with this, he also staked his claim on NCP. In this connection, separate meetings of both the factions were held on last Wednesday in which they demonstrated their strength.
More than 35 MLAs were claimed to have reached the meeting of Ajit Pawar faction, while 15 MLAs of Sharad Pawar faction had registered their presence there. However, Ajit Pawar has meanwhile claimed that he has the support of more than 40 MLAs and the NCP has 53 MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly.
