Indian Railway: After the Balasore train accident in Odisha, Archana Joshi, General Manager of South Eastern Railway, has been removed from her post. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Anil Kumar Mishra as the new General Manager of South Eastern Railway. According to the news agency PTI, Archana Joshi has been given a new responsibility. He has been made the general manager of Rail Wheel Factory at Yelahanka, Karnataka.

Balasore train accident took place on June 2

On June 2, a horrific train accident took place in Balasore, Odisha. Due to the accident, 291 people lost their lives and more than a thousand people were injured. The accident took place near Bahanaga Bazar station. At around 7 in the evening, the Coromandel Express collided with a standing goods train, due to which most of its coaches were derailed. At the same time the Bangalore-Howrah Express was passing from there. Some coaches of the Coromandel Express overturned on the rear coaches of the Bengaluru Howrah Express.

Railway Safety Commission submits report to Railway Board

News agency PTI quoted sources as saying on Thursday (June 29) that the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS), probing the Balasore train accident, has submitted its report to the Railway Board. Information about what has been told in the report has not been revealed. Senior Railway Board officials declined to comment on the findings of the report. 

Apart from CRS, CBI is also probing the accident. Since the accident, the Railways has transferred several top officials of the South Eastern Railway, under whose jurisdiction the incident took place. Preliminary investigation suggested negligence or willful interference with the signaling system as the cause of the accident.

Tenure of CBI officer monitoring probe extended

Earlier on June 28, it was reported that the tenure of senior IPS officer Viplav Kumar Chowdhary, who is supervising the CBI investigation in the Balasore train accident, has been extended. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension of his deputation tenure for a period of one year and six months from March 28, 2023 to September 27, 2024, the Personnel Ministry said in an order.
