Agartala Jul 13: In the State government schools, Kokbarok and seven other minority languages are taught as one subject and since the ‘Bru’ language is considered a dialect of Kokbarok, no plans were taken for teaching ‘Bru’ language in government schools, said Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha.
The Chief Minister was replying to ‘Matters of Urgent Public Importance’ during the ‘Reference Period’ in the State Assembly on Thursday. The issue was raised by MLA Pramod Reang.
According to Reang, there are a lot of differences between the Kokbarok and Bru languages. He emphasized the need for the introduction of the Bru language in the Government schools for the benefit of the Bru-speaking children. He also pointed out that Brus are the second largest ethnic group in the State.
In his reply, Dr Saha said, there are nine ethnic groups – Debbarma, Reang, Jamatia, Tripuri, Rupini, Murasing, Uchai, Noatia and Kaloi – which are included in nine different dialects of Kokbarok. Under the initiative of the Kokbarok and other minority languages Department, the Kokbarok Dialectal thesaurus was published listing the difference and meanings of words of dialects of every ethnic group.
As Bru is a dialect of the Kokborak language, no plan was chalked out to introduce it in the School curriculum, Dr Saha said.
In this connection, the Chief Minister also said, the Education Department formed a Committee to review the demand for recognizing Bru as a separate language. However, the Committee is yet to submit its report, and as a result no decision to this end was taken.
