Kalynapur Jul 12: A herd of wild elephants caused significant damage to properties and crops in Khagendra Bol Colony of South Ghilatali Village Panchayat in Kalyanpur. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when approximately 12 to 13 elephants attacked the area. A group of tuskers destroyed the houses of Shanikant Dey, Mithan Biswas, Sajal Namah, and Aarti Mallick. The forest department identified the affected individuals.
During the Jumbo attack, the residents were caught off guard as they were asleep when the elephants strolled into the village. In a bid to escape, the families had to exit through the windows.
The herd was eventually driven away from the village by using firecrackers. During the same period, another group of elephants damaged chilli croplands and ate jackfruits.
Kalyanpur Forest Beat Officer Rakhal Sarkar, accompanied by a patrolling team from the Teliamura Forest Department, visited the affected area on Wednesday afternoon.
Sarkar informed the reporters that all the necessary reports had been submitted to the concerned department for evaluation. The government will determine the appropriate compensation for the affected individuals, he said.
However, some residents expressed their anguish as the Kalyanpur Forest Department personnel reached the affected area so late after the incident occurred.
Meantime, the Beat Officer explained the North Maharanipur-Teliamura Road is a known roaming zone for elephants, as they frequently visit the area.
