Agartala June 17: A large number of Tom-Tom drivers on Saturday staged protest demonstration near the Swami Vivekananda grounds alleging depredations by a section of autorickshaw drivers in major auto stands of the capital city.
According to reports, a tussle broke out between the Tom-Tom and autorickshaw drivers at Radhanagar Bust Stand area when allegedly, the Tom-Tom drivers were not allowed to carry passengers.
Furious with the regular tortures, the Tom-Tom drivers on Saturday resorted to protest and gathered with their vehicles in a bid to hand over to the Transport Department office.
On being asked about the reason for protest, one of the agitating Tom-Tom drivers said, “We are not allowed to ply our vehicles in many areas of the city. Everyday our passengers are pulled off from the vehicle and are also subjected to verbal and physical assaults”.
“Despite of having valid documents the autorickshaw drivers keep on harassing us”, he added.
The agitators further added, “Unable to carry passengers, we are facing difficulties in paying the insurance and bank installments. In such a situation, we have decided to hand over our vehicles to the Transport department that gave us permission to ply on roads”.
A large contingent of police and TSR force rushed to the protest spot on receiving the information of protest.
The Tom-Tom drivers demanded the transport department authorities to ensure that they can ply their vehicles without any disturbance and attack by the autorickshaw drivers.
Later, the protest was withdrawn after receiving assurances from the police and security personnel.
However, the Tom-Tom drivers warned to staged larger protest if such situation prevails in future.
