The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday (July 18) directed state police officials to probe the voting percentage dispute in Bengal’s Rajarhat constituency. Please inform that this order from the High Court has come after a petition was filed on behalf of Saptarshi Dev, son of former state minister Gautam Dev.
Court orders probe
Violence took place in many parts of the state in the Panchayat elections held on July 8 in West Bengal. On the other hand, in Rajarhat’s Jangra Hatiyara No. 2 panchayat booth, despite a large number of voters boycotting the polls, 95 percent voting took place here. After which several petitions were filed in the High Court regarding this.
Taking cognizance of this matter of the petitioners on behalf of the High Court, Justice Amrita Sinha has asked the Director General (DG) and Inspector General (IG) of the state to start a full investigation of the matter. The Block Development Officer (BDO) of Rajarhat has also been called by the court.
According to the information, complaints were first submitted to the State Election Commission on behalf of many people regarding this matter, but no action was taken on their behalf. After which the court issued this order after filing petitions on this matter on behalf of Saptarshi Dev. Court expressed surprise at 95 percent polling.
Electoral violence claimed nearly 40 lives
Wide-scale violence took place in West Bengal on July 8 during the voting for the panchayat elections. During the voting, ballot boxes were looted, ballot papers were set on fire and bombs were also hurled at the opposition at many places. Nearly 40 people have lost their lives in the violence since the election process began in the state on June 8.
