Sickle Cell Anemia Eradication Mission 2047: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Sickle Cell Anemia Eradication Mission 2047 on Saturday (July 1) by unveiling a portal in Madhya Pradesh. Along with this, he also issued guidelines for its management and several modules for its monitoring to eliminate this disease. The PM also distributed around 3.57 crore digital cards and over one crore PVC Ayushman Bharat cards under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana during the event.

PM Modi said in MP’s Shahdol that half of the cases of ‘sickle cell anemia’ in the whole world are in our country alone, but it is unfortunate that it was never worried in the last 70 years. No concrete plan was made to deal with it. The Prime Minister said that this disease mainly affects the tribal communities. Together we will liberate the country from this sickle cell anemia by running a campaign. Let us tell you about the Sickle Cell Anemia Eradication Mission-2047 and about this disease.

What is sickle cell anemia?

Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder that continues from generation to generation. This disease comes from parents to the child. It affects the red blood cells (red blood cells) responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. A person with sickle cell anemia suffers from a reduction or blockage of blood flow, resulting in a range of symptoms that usually appear around the age of six months.

These are the symptoms of this sickle cell anemia

Symptoms of sickle cell anemia include pain in the hands, feet and joints, osteoporosis, recurrent jaundice, liver swelling, bladder obstruction/pain, and gallstones. This disease obstructs the oxygen flow in the body, causing fatigue and pain throughout the body. People with the disease can be classified as sickle cell carriers or sickle patients.

What is the mission to eradicate sickle cell anemia?

The National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM) was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2023. It aims to address the serious health challenges posed by sickle cell disease, especially among the tribal population. It aims to eliminate sickle cell anemia by screening and creating awareness among about 7 crore people in the age group of 0-40 years in the affected tribal areas.

Will be implemented in these states

The mission will be implemented in 278 districts across 17 states including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar and Uttarakhand . The BJP government has taken the responsibility of leading this mission. PM Modi has declared it a priority initiative. The PM set a target of ridding the country of the burden of the disease by 2047, the year India will celebrate the centenary of its independence.

What did PM Modi say?

PM said that this disease scatters families. It is neither spread by water, nor by air, nor by food. This is a genetic disease, that is, it comes from the parents to the child. He said that this campaign to get rid of sickle cell anemia will become the main mission of Amrit Kaal. I have full faith that when the country will celebrate 100 years of independence i.e. by 2047, we all together will run a mission mode campaign to free our tribals and the country from this sickle cell anemia.
